Rule out ‘because of’ and get in ‘in spite of’: No one will be interested in reasons, everyone is interested in the performance.

When I was doing my M. Phil degree course at Anna University, Chennai, I received an offer letter from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore for the post of Research Associate. I got this invite as I cleared the all India competitive exam conducted by the UGC jointly with CSIR and was awarded the Junior Research Fellowship. I was afraid of going there as it was totally a new place and I don’t have any known people there.

Because of this fear of throwing myself in an unknown territory I refused that offer!  I missed such a wonderful opportunity! Didn’t I ?

Just before my marriage I had a chance to work at Sri Sarada College for women at Salem in a QIP leave vacancy, government order. That order was for 11 months. But, I got married in between and settled in Chennai. So, every weekend I used to travel from Salem to Chennai and fro. Friday evening I used to start from Salem in Kovai Express and reach here at night around 11. Return was more hectic, Monday morning I had to catch the Kovai express at 06.00 o’clock. Waking up early in the morning was adding fuel to the already burning stress of going away from home, that too going alone.

Because of this I wanted to quit my job. Aruni also was very much concerned and supported my decision. I had to pay 3 months' salary as penalty for resigning in the middle, and more than that, I missed one year of teaching experience.

Even now I regret these two decisions I took. I committed those mistakes since I did not understand that Life is never ‘because of’, Life is ‘in spite of’.

We can always give reasons and say, ‘because of’ so many other important reasons I am dropping out. But, I can also say in spite of all these compelling reasons I will continue and complete the task. When we use ‘because of’, our mind automatically prepares more reasons and we fail in life. When we use ‘in spite of’, our mind becomes powerful and we become successful. It brings the best out of  us and we find ourselves growing.

No one will be interested in reasons, everyone is interested in performance. Yes, If we rewind and see, we also might have given reasons like: I have some family problems, ‘Because of’ that I could not concentrate on my work. The same thing if you say ‘In spite of’ that I am doing justice to what I am doing would make a leader out of you!

One of my friends resigned from her job at a well-known organisation because of the hectic time she had taking care of her children, and to teach them after the school time and now she is regretting that.

We have enough reasons to drop out. Realise the difference between the two: 'Because of' and 'in spite of'. Remember this whenever you are about to say “because of” so that you are not quitting from doing something.

No one will be interested in reasons, everyone is interested in the performance.

Where excellence is there explanations are seldom required and Where explanations are there, excellence is not achieved.

Let us rule out ‘because of’ and get in ‘in spite of’.

Remember this mantra and Achieve excellence in your life.

  6. A well inspiring message Madhu.
If I think "I can" or I think "I can't", both are correct. When I think I can the" in spite of" Will work. When I think I can't, then the "Because of" will start working.
Also when I have a positive thinking, then this -Because of - also works in that direction.
    Because of---
    -my hard work,
    -my hectic preparation,
    -my persistent attempt,
    etc.. etc....
Your message with real life examples is a highly motivating one for all, especially for our younger generation.
